Ok, here's the story from what I know and what myself and my friend could gather (what we think happened before cops arrived). Friend was at work and had Ivy kenneled in the front part of the yard. Other puppies they had kept from their litter were kenneled in the back. Ivy wasn't kenneled with the others because she's so submissive and gets picked on. We believe their "trouble maker" puppies escaped their kennel like they have before and antagonized Ivy in hers. Ivy has never escaped her crate or even tried. She was so docile. But we think the others were jumping at her crate and she was probably pawing and jumping too and the latch came undone. The neighbors heard my friend's pig squealing (pig was in a pen in the front yard) and called the cops. The cops were told pit bulls were on the property. The cops show up and find the puppies attacking the pig (all on my friend's fully fenced in private property).
Without my friend being notified of the situation and never giving consent, the cops hopped the fence, trespassing onto private property. They do indeed have signs warning of dogs as well as no trespassing signs. The 2 trouble maker puppies ran and hid, they're used to being in trouble. They've killed many chickens. Ivy, however, didn't run. I'm guessing she either stood her ground or was so scared, she didn't know what to do. Idk if she also went after the pig due to "pack mentality" or was just out running around. She was raised with my cats and never killed my friend's chickens. Hell, I had been working on her NOT running away scared from bigger animals. Deputy Jourdon claims he "had a standoff" with Ivy and chose to put 3 shots into her. 2 shotgun rounds and 1 handgun round. The other 2 puppies were left in the yard, unharmed. Animal Control was there and didn't bother to intervene. Neighbors told my friend they were told to "call everyday and complain about the dogs". I truly believe Ivy was a victim of breed discrimination. A grown man claiming to be threantened by a puppy is bullshit and who shoots a puppy? Then telling the neighbors to call and complain everyday... Ivy has never been aggressive. She was a calm, lazy, sweet natured puppy. I told my neighbors what happened and they cried. They're writing a statement for me about her temperament and training so I have proof she's never been out of control or shown aggression. I made it a point to train her very well to ensure she was a model doggy citizen, a positive representation of pit bulls. Ivy didn't deserve to die. The situation should've been handled much differently..
I have nothing against law enforcement. I would've totally understood if my puppy had gotten out of the yard and harmed someone else's animal. It would still break my heart, but I would understand.
We don't know if Ivy had joined in with the other puppies in going after my friend's pig. I understand dogs do things like that, especially due to "pack mentality". She definitely could have participated. But, when I think of her temperament and personality, I know she's very docile and terrified of anything bigger than her. It's possible she was just out and a romping around when the other 2 were after the pig. The other 2 had blood on them so they definitely were culprits. When we looked at Ivy's body, she hadn't been cleaned up. The blood on her looked like it was all from the gun wounds. But, we will never know. It's a situation that could've been avoided if the deputies made the right choice and called my friend instead of ignoring the "beware of dog" and "no trespassing" signs and trespassing upon private property.
I spoke to the Sargent on duty tonight... He went over the Police Report with me. Apparently, they as well as the neighbor tried to contact my friend before the situation escalated but couldn't get a hold of them. They are saying their job was to protect the pig that couldn't defend itself so they had the right to go onto the property.
They scared away the 2 other puppies but Ivy apparently "charged" after them... I still don't see how they felt they had to unload 2 shotgun rounds and a handgun round into her. She was only 40lbs and still a baby... Pretty upset. I asked to speak to Deputy Jourdan at a more convenient time (was told he was out on the field). But they said he works nights and really can't... was told to mail him the letter I had wanted to read to him... but I also wanted his point of view... Feel a bit defeated and emotional cry emoticon
So, my friend isn't pressing charges. Basically, it's saying the deputies were in the right to jump the fence and do what they did. I understand they wanted to save the pig. I don't understand why they couldn't have Animal Control grab Ivy. Such brutal force shouldn't have been used on a puppy. There's not much I can do when she won't do anything to make it right. I just hope her dogs don't get hurt or killed in the future because of her decision...
Police are killing a family pet every 98 minutes of every day of every month of every year!
"Is a Pet Dog Really Killed by a Police Officer Every 98 Minutes?"
"A new documentary promises to shed light on the size and scope of America's under-covered "puppycide" epidemic."
"Cops shooting dogs when they arguably don't need to is called "puppycide" by opponents (naturally). Animal rights activists and civil libertarians say these shootings are widespread, a result of officers having little-to-no training on how to deal with dogs."
It's time for the needless killing of innocent family pets to stop!!!!
